Talking about famous asian paintings, we can start with the following:
S. Sudjojono
S. Sudjojono born in North Sumatera in 1913, is one of the most famous Indonesian artists of all times. He is widely regarded as one of the forefathers of modern Indonesian painting artistes, as well as “revolutionary painter”. His style gradually shifted from sketching soldiers, to expressionism that was inspired by Van Gogh.
In 1937, S. Sudjojono formed Persagi, the Indonesian Drawing Masters’ Association, where he fathered the turning point of Indonesian fine art. Later in 1946, he founded the Young Artists of Indonesia (Seniman Muda Indonesia).
Raden Saleh
Raden Sarief Bustaman Saleh born in 1807 in Semarang, is one of the best known 19th century modern naturalist painters from Indonesia. He was one of the rare Indonesian art painters, who received a scholarship from The Netherlands government to study in the Netherlands.
Many of his paintings were exhibited in Amsterdam. Fifty years after his death, several compositions that were created during this period, were burnt in Paris in 1931.
Hendra Gunawan
Hendra Gunawan, one of the pioneers of Indonesian modern artistes, uses European visuals, that have created human expressionism, with feeling and experience. Hendra was described, as an artist “whose Indonesian-ness was indisputable and a man whose’infatuation with the people’, as well as with the republic, was lifelong” (Astri Wright, Soul, Spirit and Mountain: Preoccupations of contemporary Indonesian painters, 1994:166, quoting from the 18, 19 and 20 July 1983 editions of KOMPAS)
Later, Hendra was imprisoned for 13 years as a result of involvement with LEKRA. The paintings during this period are full with emotional expression, as a result of the hardships that he had undergone.
Lee Man Fong
Lee Man Fong (1913-1988) was born in Canton, China. He emigrated to singapore in 1916 with his family when he was 3 years old. In Singapore, he learnt both Chinese painting (Lingnan style) as well as Western oil painting. In 1932, he left Singapore for Indonesia. Since then, he stayed there for 35 years. He established an advertising agency as a commercial artist.He was also an advisor of art, to the late President Sukarno. After 1940, he devoted himself to painting, and subsequently in 1947, he was awarded a grant to study art in Holland for 3 years. Lee Man Fong’s extraordinary career has reaffirmed his contributions as a pioneer Southeast Asian artist.
Huang Fong
Huang Fong ( East Java 1936 ) became a professianal artist in 1963. Initially, he painted oil on canvas. However, during 1974, he began to expand his effort in combining the East and West techniques.
